Submitted by Drop Goal on May 22 2009 04:22:31

Under 9s - 2008/09

This was Leyland Warriors' last home game of the season. Wigan St Judes scored the opening try on the first run of the game, catching Leyland Warriors' defence a bit cold.

After that Leyland Warriors got back into the game and did some great work though their forwards, gaining good metres.

Leyland Warriors' first try came from wide out on the right wing from Adam Whitter side stepping his way across the line to score. His efforts gained him the Coaches' Special Award. Daniel Almond, Jack Ambrose and Byrony Kealey drove the ball forwards well, while Kieran Clough had a good game in defence and remembered to spin in the tackle.

Joe Watson pick up the Man of the Match award for his running with ball in hand and good tackling technique, turning the man over on his back. Alfie Hoare continued to improve his running and going forward got himself Player of the Week award.

Lewis Warburton showed good skill to pass and put William Sharples away down the right wing to score a very good try. With his tackling and tracking back he was given Best Tackler Award.

Jared Pocklington ran onto the ball with pace, creating problems for the St Judes' defence and on the back of this Jamie Sharples controlled the acting half back role well with some good passes.

Team:
Daniel Almond, Jack Ambrose, Kieran Clough, Alfie Hoare, Byrony Kealey, Jared Pocklington, Jamie Sharples, William Sharples Lewis Warburton, Adam Whitter and Joseph Watson.

26-04-09: Leyland Warriors U15s 62, Latchford Albion 0

Under 15s - 2008/09

This was an impressive performance by the Warriors against fellow strugglers Latchford. Leyland got off to the best possible start as the visitors failed to field the kick off and, from the resulting scrum, quick hands allowed Oliver Yates to score in the corner, converted by Lewis Allen.

Ten minutes later Allen added to the tally as he skated through a static defence to score next to the posts, which he duly converted to give the Warriors an impressive 12 point lead early on.

Quick hands again saw Jack Martland dive in at the corner followed 5 minutes later by a try from Peter Szwandt, converted by Allen as the Warriors began to dominate their opponents. With only minutes remaining in the first half, Daniel Horridge scooted over to give Leyland an impressive 28 point lead at the break.

In the second half, Leyland piled on the pressure as Tom Watson scored in the corner closely followed by a50 yard Ollie Yates special, again converted by Allen. Szwandt helped himself to his second try, touching down next to the posts following a great kick from Allen.

Yates completed his hat trick closely followed by a try from captain Luke Hemmings playing his last game for the club, which was converted by Luke himself. Connor Sugden nipped in for a try late on to complete an emphatic victory for the Warriors and a fine end to
the season.

Man of the Match was Bill Saundry and Top Tackler was Tom Watson.

The coaches and players would like to take this opportunity to extend their thanks and best wishes to Luke for the future. Luke is a great player wih a good knowledge of the game and has been an integral part of the team since its conception. He will be sorely missed. "Good Luck Luke" from Paul, Ian and your team mates.

19-04-09: Leyland Warriors U9s 4, Halton Farnworth Hornets 32

Under 9s - 2008/09

Today Leyland Warriors were up against a strong Halton Farnworth Hornets team in both defence and attack. Ben Martin scored for Leyland Warriors and with good defence, he won the Man of the Match award.

Daniel Almond and Jack Ambrose gained us many metres up field with ball in hand. Leyland Warriors started to pass to each other and Jared Pocklington got Player of the Week award for some good passing. With some good tackling and passing Lewis Warburton gained Coaches' Special award, while William Sharples’ tracking and cover defence earned him the Best Tackler award.

Jamie Sharples scooted from dummy half and caught the Halton defence out, while Adam Whitter had another good game in defence.

Today, the Leyland Warriors team was starting to look for one another with the ball, which was pleasing to see. Well done to the young Warriors who never gave in and worked hard for each other.

Team:
Daniel Almond, Jack Ambrose, Ben Martin, Jared Pocklington, Jamie Sharples, William Sharples, Lewis Warburton, Adam Whitter.

19-04-09: Leyland Warriors U11s 4, Newton Storm 24

Submitted by Drop Goal on April 20 2009 11:43:23

Under 11s - 2008/09The Warriors gave everything in this game in which tough and uncompromising defence was a feature from both teams. Handling errors ultimately proved the difference between the two teams as the Warriors made several unforced mistakes in their own half which gifted scoring opportunities to Newton.

The Warriors' only try of the game came when good work from the forwards, led by Matthew Clegg, gained a strong attacking position. Scott Dixon capped a fine performance by drawing in both wing and centre to put fullback Jack Thompson in for a well worked try.

Throughout the game, Ellis Pocklington and Billy Bishop tackled superbly, while James Almond’s kicking game caused the Storm several problems.

This was another game where the Warriors gifted their opponents a twelve point start but despite the score line, this was a close match in which both teams competed well and a performance the Warriors can be proud of.

Team:
James Almond, Cameron Armour, Billy Bishop, Rob Breen, Matthew Clegg, Joe Clough, Scott Dixon, Joel Hunt, Joe Kirkby, Morgan Murray, James O’Neill, Ellis Pocklington, Declan Roberts, Jack Thompson, Ollie Thompson, Josh Walmsley.

05-04-09: Leyland Warriors U11s 52, Liverpool Lions 22

Submitted by Drop Goal on April 07 2009 07:40:06

Under 11s - 2008/09

Summer rugby arrived in Leyland on Sunday morning and this had a profound effect on the Warriors’ handling and their confidence in spreading the ball about. This resulted in a number of spectacular long range tries as good work from halves James Almond and Scott Dixon gave the backs plenty of room to work in.

Tries were scored by Billy Bishop, Matthew Clegg, Scott Dixon, Joel Hunt, Joe Kirkby, Jack Thompson (3), Ollie Thompson and Josh Walmsley, with Clegg, Dixon, Hunt, Kirkby, Declan Roberts and Jack Thompson adding conversions.

The most pleasing aspect of this game for the coaches was the unselfish approach from the whole team and the support play on show from the Warriors. It was this unselfishness in his centre play, together with some tenacious defence which saw Joel Hunt receive the Man of the Match award.

James O’Neill’s top defensive display in a Leyland shirt earned him the Best Tackler award as he wrapped up well and chased hard from marker. Coaches' Special Award went to new boy Connor Sadler who not only made a great break but had the presence of mind to look for support as he was caught, resulting in a very special try.

Still plenty of work to do in defence but a good attacking performance as a TEAM and all credit to the Lions who played the game in great spirit from the first whistle to the last.

Team:
James Almond, Billy Bishop, Matthew Clegg, Scott Dixon, Joel Hunt, Joe Kirkby, James O’Neill, Declan Roberts, Connor Sadler, Jack Thompson, Ollie Thompson, Josh Walmsley.

05-04-09: West Bank Bears 28, Leyland Warriors U9s 20

Submitted by Drop Goal on April 07 2009 07:38:27

Under 9s - 2008/09

West Bank Bears went into a 2 try lead in as many attacks before Leyland Warriors managed to get on the score sheet, with Ben Martin scoring one of his 4 tries which, with good cover tackling, earned him the Man of the Match award.

Kieran Clough played at scrum half today for the first time and played well with good passes and good tackling gaining him the Coaches' Special Award. Player of the Week went to Jack Ambrose for his running on to the ball. By half time the score was West Bank Bears 16 – 12 Leyland Warriors.

After the break Leyland Warriors conceded a couple of tries before good running from Lewis Warburton saw him cross the line to score. Alfie Hoare made good yards going forward and Daniel Almond got Best Tackler Award for moving off the line and putting good tackles in. Near the end, Leyland Warriors were getting on top of West Bank Bears but not enough time was left to convert their dominance.

Special thanks go to Danny and Jack who played for Leyland Warriors.

Team:
Daniel Almond, Jack Ambrose, Kieran Clough, Alfie Hoare, Ben Martin, Lewis Warburton.

28-03-09: Leyland Warriors OA 32, Waterhead 4

Submitted by Drop Goal on March 30 2009 15:37:37

Open Age - 2008/09

A lack of composure by the Warriors saw them make a disappointing start and concede the first try, only just pulling a score back on half-time, to lead 6-4 at the break.

The second half was a different story as Leyland’s passes began to stick and the pack began punching holes in the Waterhead line. Despite a valiant effort from the visitors, they were unable to match the Warriors’ pace as Karl Edgar, Dan Susnik, Tom Worrall, Paul Lorenzen and Chris Brindle (2) all crossed for tries with Scott Low adding 4 conversions.

Man of the Match was Phil Hammock and Josh Halstead was awarded Best Tackler.
